Hva er viktig? // What is important?
What is important for children and young people to feel good even when life can be difficult?
No one gets through difficult experiences alone – support from others is important. Research shows that those who cope well after experiencing something difficult often have five important factors in place:
- Safety – Children and young people need to feel safe again, both physically and emotionally. Routines, predictability and the presence of safe adults are helpful.
- Inner peace – Learning strategies for managing stress and anxiety, such as breathing techniques or calming activities, can help children and young people regulate their emotions.
- Self-confidence – Children and young people need to experience that they can influence their own situation, and that help is available when they ask for it.
- Social support – Having good relationships and feeling part of a community is crucial for building resilience.
- Hope – Optimism for the future gives strength to handle challenges and belief that things can get better.
These principles work independently, but they also reinforce each other. Parents, school and friends can be a good support for children and young people to do well even though life can be difficult.
