Tema 3 // Theme 3
Mind and body are connected
The mind and body are connected. When the brain sounds the alarm and tells us that something is dangerous or unpleasant, the body also becomes stressed. Then, we can talk to the brain to help both the mind and body calm down.
The mind and body
The mind and body are connected and influence each other. When we are in a frightening situation, something happens to our body. The body gets ready to protect us. It is supposed to protect us from danger, which is a very good thing. It is the brain that tells the body that something is dangerous and that the body should be ready. The brain sounds the alarm. Then the heart starts beating faster and we start breathing faster.

Talking to the brain
Sometimes the alarm goes off in our brain even though we are not in a dangerous situation. This may be because we suddenly think, see, or hear something that reminds us of something dangerous. This is a false alarm, and we can help ourselves by turning off the alarm. If we feel scared or anxious, we can help our brain relax by talking to our brain and telling it that it is not dangerous right now.
What will we learn?
- Learn to talk to the brain to become calmer.
- Practice the “Safe Place” exercise, the “Tense and release” exercise and breathing exercises.
