Hva er FN? // What is the UN?
De forente nasjoner, is the Norwegian name for the international organization the United Nations. UN is the abbreviation for the United Nations, and FN is the abbreviation for the Norwegian name. The United Nations works toward peace, justice, and cooperation between countries all over the world. The United Nations was founded in 1945, after the Second World War, with the goal of preventing more large wars.
Almost all the countries in the world are members of the UN. They have agreed that they will cooperate in order to solve problems, such as war, poverty, sickness, and climate change. The agreement is called the Charter of the United Nations.
The UN’s logo has five circles and a white map of the world. Around the map are two olive branches. The olive branches act as symbols showing that the UN has a goal to maintain peace and security in the world.
International UN Day is celebrated every year on the 24th of October.

What does the United Nations do?
The UN has many important purposes. You can read about some of them below.
Peace and security
The UN works toward a safer world. Sometimes, conflicts arise between countries. The UN can then help to find peaceful solutions. If a war still breaks out, the UN can send soldiers to protect civilians. They can also help rebuild societies after a war.
Emergency aid
The UN aids people who live in areas with war, natural catastrophes or poverty. They give food, water, medicine, and shelter. Sometimes the UN helps people who must flee.
Human Rights
The UN works towards the goal that all people in the world shall be treated fairly and with respect. The UN has a list that includes what all people have a right to. The list is called the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Human Rights are about the right to live securely, go to school, have freedom of expression, and to be treated equally before the law, no matter who you are. All member countries of the UN must follow the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Convention on the Rights of the Child
Children need extra protection so they have more rights. These rights are called UN’s Convention on the Rights of the Child. It is about how all children have the right to be protected, be safe, and have a good life. The UN ensures that all countries follow the rules in the Convention on the Rights of the Child so that all children are well wherever they live.
The UN’s Sustainable Development Goals
The Sustainable Development Goals are a list of 17 goals that intend to make the world a better place for both people and the environment. The goals aim to end poverty, and to make sure that all children have the opportunity to go to school. They also aim to stop global warming, and to protect animals, plants, and planet earth.
The UN’s General Assembly

The General Assembly’s most important task is to discuss how the world’s biggest challenges should be solved. Representatives from all member countries sit in the General Assembly. Each country can give its opinion and vote for suggestions about solutions. The General Assembly gathers each autumn in the UN building. The UN building is in New York in the USA.
Why is The United Nations important?
The United Nations is an important organization because it is where nearly all countries in the world cooperate to make the world better. The United Nations works toward peace, stopping wars, helping people who are poor or fleeing, and protecting nature and our environment.
