Hva skjer når kongen dør? // What happens when the king dies?
On Friday the 28th of August 2026, King Harald died. Many people were saddened by this. You will see flags at half mast, people bringing flowers, and adults talking about the king a lot on TV and in the news. In Oslo, many people gathered in front of the castle to pay their respects.

It is quite common for a king to die when he grows old, just like other people. When that happens, Norway has plans for what will happen next.
Norway gets a new king

The Crown Prince is the king’s son. At the same moment that King Harald died, Crown Prince Haakon became king. The new king has chosen to be called King Haakon VIII.
Much of daily life in Norway continues exactly as before. The adults who are responsible for the country know what to do. The government, the parliament, the police, schools, hospitals and the rest of society continue their work.
It’s okay to be sad
After the king died, many people will talk about him, think about him and remember him. In many places you can see, read or hear about King Harald’s life. He lived a long time, was involved in many things and did many good things for Norway.

Soon there will be a funeral for King Harald. It will take place in Oslo Cathedral. Some people are sad when a king dies. Even though they have never met him, many feel that they know him. This is because he has been present when important, difficult, and pleasant things have happened in Norway. Many say that King Harald was like a grandfather to all the children and young people in Norway.
Children can also react differently. Some become sad or worried. Others become curious and have lots of questions. And some don’t think much about it at all. All of these reactions are completely normal.

You are safe
Even though you hear many people talking about the king being dead, Norway is not in danger. The country continues to function. You can go to school, be with friends, play, go to training and do the normal things you usually do.
If the news makes you anxious, it can be a good idea to talk to an adult you trust. Adults can explain what you’re wondering about, and you don’t have to follow all the news.
The most important thing to remember is: When a king dies, Norway has a plan. A new king takes over, adults make sure that society functions, and our everyday lives continue.
